Frank, instrumental in the planting of over 500 trees across Wingerworth, was shocked when the District Council demanded the trees be removed.
The District Council own a strip of the our park, parallel to Allendale Rd shops. The demand by the District Council to relocate the newly planted trees whilst it “reviews its plans for that section of land” is an unwelcome reminder of the plan to build on this land in 2019. Recent attempts toprotect our park have been rebuffed.
Before the trees were relocated they were sprayed (without permission) with a harmful weedkiller. A number of trees have subsequently died.
The District Council are also responsible for the attack on a wild space in our village. Frank immediately questioned Wingerworth’s three District Councillors when he saw the horrific scenes in what was once a lush wild space full of self-seeding oak saplings.
The piece of land on the right of Longedge Lane by the local shops has been turned into what looks like scorched earth. The area was teeming with life and served as a wild space for nature and youngsters! Doing such a short haircut in the middle of spring is especially damaging, and this follows a number of Incidents in which the District Council has been heavy handed with our green spaces.
Whilst they are disappointed by the behaviour of the District and County Council, Frank and Nicola won’t stop fighting for Wingerworth.
