Former Labour leader joins greens

Former Deputy Leader of Derbyshire County Council Labour Group, Mick Wall, has joined the growing ranks of Derbyshire’s Green Party.

Previously a member of Chesterfield Borough Council between 2015 and 2019 (Cabinet member between 2015 - 2017) and Derbyshire County Council between 2017 and 2021 (Labour Group Deputy Leader 2019 - 2021), Mick joined the Green

Party in September.

“With the Labour Party continuing to choose to fight itself rather than act as a responsible opposition to what must be the worst Conservative government in living memory, it made me seriously consider why I should support it by continuing my Party membership,” Mick said. “I have admired the Green Party’s commitments to social, economic and environmental justice for a long time. It just seemed the natural thing to do to show my ongoing support to those same principles by joining the only party that seems to genuinely want to bring about positive change without getting dragged down into the petty party political squabbling that is rife in Westminster and our local Council chambers”.

“The local Green Party have made me very welcome, and their approach on local issues is like a breath of fresh air. I’m really looking forward to talking to local people about what the Green Party can do to help champion the interests of local communities.”

Darren Yates, Derbyshire Green Party Co-ordinator said, “We are very pleased that Mick has made the choice to join the Green Party, at what is an exciting time for us, and it is a demonstration that the old parties no longer represent a large number of people, and the Green Party, with our focus on both social and ecological justice, is increasingly seen as a positive choice for many”.
